Ved Vignan Maha Vidya Peeth - The School with a Difference

The Ved Vignan Maha Vidya Peeth was established in 1981 with a commitment for excellence in holistic education for children from a rural background. Located in Udayapura, Bangalore, the school provides free education to over 2000 children from around 51 neighboring villages.

Besides education, transport, mid-day meals, uniforms, schoolbooks & bags and regular medical check-ups are also provided to the children free of cost so that they don't forsake their education for want of any material amenities.

Inspired by His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, the school focuses on the all-round development of the child. Each day begins with a short meditation. This helps the children to remain stress-free however the circumstance in their homes may be. Along with academics, education is balanced with an emphasis on social responsibilities and human values.

The girl children (who constitute 50% of the school population a remarkable figure for a rural school) undergo tailoring classes so that they have a skill in their hands even as they graduate from school. The children of higher classes also receive basic computer education. Though many of the children are first generation literates, 100% success rate in the board exams is a feat accomplished by VVMVP School. These children are now truly rays of hope for their parents.

The Tribal and Rural Schools of The Art of Living

Dear friend and pupil at the VVMVP School in Bangalore,

My name is Jack Johansson. I'm an Art of Living and YES!+ Teacher in Sweden, Europe. I also work with youth in the ages from 13 to 19, supporting them to realize projects they would like to do. They are doing music festivals, sports events, film screenings and other dream projects they wish to realize. Every project is called Local Hero and is proactive against drugs.

The first autumn month starts here tomorrow (1st of September).

We have nice summers in Sweden (June-August) and beautiful autumns though it gets really dark, rainy and windy in late October and November.

The last years we haven't had much snow in the winters (December - February) because of the climate changes on earth.

We are selling T-Shirts to SPEED UP the Millennium Development Goals. The T-Shirts are made in Sri Lanka by the company DEM Collective that makes clothes with fair conditions to be sure that no one has been exploited during the production chain. This is valid for both humans and the environment. Human rights and the use of ecological materials are vital for their business.

On the back of the T-Shirts it says "Collect Donations to VVMVP Rural Schools". Therefor we would like you to tell about yourself, your friends and other children who lives in the villages and the rural areas around the school.

We would like to collect donations to your school so that even more children from the villages and the rural areas around your school can get primary education.

We're looking forward to your letters, photos and videos. We will publish them on http://speedupmdg.blogspot.com for everyone in Sweden, Europe and the rest of the world to learn and get inspired of.

Best regards

Jack Johansson
